Le Moineau Masqué

I’m territorial about having my own work space when I’m at a coffee shop. When all the tables have at least one patron, I head to my plan B or take my drink to go and call it a day. I don’t want to face anyone and I don’t want strangers sitting on either of my sides. Stay home and get a desk? Shut up.

At Le Moineau Masqué, however, I make due with the tight, almost claustrophobic spaces. A free chair at that wooden table with three friends who don’t want to be disturbed? Mine. Room for half a person on the navy blue couch? Don't mind my thighs.

Located in the heart of the Plateau, where streets Saint-André and Marie-Anne meet, owner Fanny Godey’s small, intimate café knows exactly how to romance customers into regulars: exposed brick walls painted white, round and white oversized paper lanterns floating overhead and light bulbs dangling from black cords coiled around ceiling rods, and colourful fleece blankets for snuggling on the couch.

The house uses beans from 49th Parallel and Brûlerie Saint-Henri to prepare the espresso base. I’m all for the latte (S: $3.95, L: $4.25), but when there’s room to stay, the moccachino ($4.40) is my drink of choice. Served in a turquoise bowl and finished with a bitter dusting of cocoa powder to complement the sweet chocolate intertwined with hot milk and espresso, there’s nothing quite like cupping its warmth in my hands and single-handedly downing a portion big enough for two to share in a place that makes me feel at home.

Ooh I was looking for coffee shops to discover and that one is now part of my bucket list. Thank you for the suggestion! Also, the decor looks lovely ;)
