Schwartz's

Schwartz’s is a Montreal Landmark and with good reason; the smoked meat is unrivaled anywhere else in the world, yes the world. It’s no surprise that whatever the time of day, the line goes way out the door, sometimes even around the corner – it’s just that good. This Jewish Delicatessen is small in size, and often crammed to the point of driving claustrophobics up the wall, but that’s part of its charm. If you’re lucky grab a table, if not get it to go, never leave the premises without smoked meat in hand.

My usual order is a hearty stack of Medium-Fat, luscious pink, smoked meat sandwiched between two pieces of mustard-slathered rye bread; it’s amazingly good. The smoked brisket is rich in flavor, incredibly moist and kind of melts in your mouth. Simply put, there’s nothing else like it. Make sure to order a side of greasy fries, a sour pickle and a black cherry cola – they totally add to the experience. Seriously, if you think you know smoked meat having never been to Schwartz’s, you don’t know what you’re talking about. NO ONE does smoked meat like they do.

Went to Schwartz after 20 years. The first time I went I got sick, didn't go back until recently. It hasn't gotten much better. The smoke meat is still not fantastic, half of the sandwich was the pepper coating, yuk! Also, the staff is incredibly rude not to mention sarcastic. Not worth it at all.

I have to disagree. I think if you want to be wined and dined, go to a place with servers. Here the charm is the busy diner feel. I tried smoked meat at a couple places around Montreal (Dunn's, Ruben's) and found it was dry at both. Schwarzt's meat was so tender, the portion size was ridiculous, and the boy who brought our food was quite funny though it was obvious he was very busy.
I don't remember the pepper coating being too thick.

Wow Anna. I dunno where you went, but I doubt very much that it was Schwartz'. I've been there probably....a billion times. I've never been dissatisfied. And I'm a stickler for service. One thing you need to understand though, is that the place is EXTREMELY busy. They have clientele to serve, they want people to come back, and not be disenchanted by the long line. If they seem hasty and don't have time to show proper courtesy, it's because they have a landmark to run. Patrons need to understand this, and not expect to walk in and be treated like a king/queen. As for the pepper coating, it certainly isn't half the sandwich, and if it were, why yuck?
