Pho Lien

A bowl of pho is easily within reach as Vietnamese restaurants are prevalent in the city. I didn’t say a great bowl of pho, I said a bowl of pho, there’s a huge difference. Luckily for you, I can point you in the right direction.  Pho Lien is in a league of its own. Come rain or shine, or in this case snow, this little gem is always crammed with locals that know a good thing, a really good thing.  Don’t be intimidated by the line up that extends past the front door, the turnover is quick, so don’t go anywhere because what’s waiting for you inside this modest establishment is totally worth it.

A typical bowl of pho consists of rice noodles and slim cuts of beef (steak, fatty flank, lean flank, brisket) swimming in a piping hot clear beef broth. I usually order an extra large bowl with additional items that some people might classify as unusual to create interesting textures, like beef balls, tripe (animals stomach tissue) and tendons. Here, for freshness and added zest, pho is characteristically garnished with fresh bean sprouts, basil and lime wedges. Hoisin and sriracha (chili) sauces are found at the table, but I prefer to enjoy my pho as it is, in all its glory.  For the most part, all ingredients added post-broth are essentially the same anywhere you go. What separates Pho Lien from its competitors is the broth. While other restaurants take a shortcut and saturate it with MSG, this one is simmered over a long period of time to allow the natural flavors of the ingredients and loads of spices to infuse into the liquid. It’s incredibly rich in flavor and complex in taste – it’s so good.

I’ve been a fan of the pho at Pho Lien ever since my first spoonful. This Vietnamese soup is warm, comforting and hearty. It’s authentic, extremely affordable and bursting with flavor. The quality is unmatched anywhere else in Montreal. You just have to experience it to know what I’m talking about.
