Marathon Souvlaki

Marathon Souvlaki is my Greek go-to place when I want to enjoy an affordable but tasty meal in good company. While I can’t say much about the authenticity of its cuisine, I’ve been a happy customer for many years. It's nothing fancy, but the atmosphere is really warm and inviting, the service is fast, efficient and friendly, and the food is filling, comforting and always puts a smile on my face.

Soon after you place your order, a basket of warm bread generously slathered with garlic butter is set on the table. They’re so good they’re guaranteed to disappear within minutes. You can request another batch, but remember to control yourself, otherwise there won’t be any room for the actual meal – seriously.

One of my favorite items on the menu is the Gyro– fatty roast pork slices, fresh tomatoes and onions, and creamy tzatziki all enveloped in a warm pita, mmm mmm mmm. It’s incredibly messy to eat with the oil running down your hands and cream oozing out when you take a bite, so if you’re trying to look cute on a first date order something else. Just remember that you’re passing up a really good thing, so he/she better be worth it. Sides are included and complete every experience. I usually get the golden medallion fries over the fluffy rice pilaf, and the house salad instead of the Greek one. Simply put, this generous plateful really really hits the spot.

Yummm, making me hungry. I've never been here! I usually go to La Ligne Rouge at Jean Talon for food like this ...

I tried a pork souvlaki pita here once and didn't find it all that impressive. Meat was dry and the pita was toasted too much as it lost its fluffiness but perhaps I should give it another shot.

Try going to the original one on St-Viateur - I heard much better things about it. But between Arahova and its competitor Marathon Souvlaki, I'd choose the latter any day.
