Exquisite sushi is really difficult to come by in Montreal, but all-you-can-eat second-rate sushi joints run by anyone but Japanese people are quite common.  Kanda is a buffet style sushi restaurant popular with the college crowd. I must stress that the food here is nothing special. It's a hit and miss kind of place, but I come here and hope for the best when I need a heaping fix.

The menu includes both a variety of sushi and kitchen specialties.  Most of my friends fill up on everything but sushi, but I usually stay away from the ordinary and mediocre kitchen items; otherwise I’d be too full to actually eat sushi. However, there are times when I can’t help myself, and that’s when a plateful of BBQ squid, shrimp tempura, dumplings and garlic shrimp can be found at my table. The assorted sashimi (sliced raw fish), nigirizushi (hand pressed sushi), hand rolls and makizushi (rolled sushi) are decent on a good day. The fresh fish is passable and the rice is usually good enough – let’s just leave it at that.

Prices vary according to the time of day and week, but just remember that evenings are more expensive because more options are available. Be careful when ordering! Don’t get more than you can actually handle; they charge you $1.00 for every piece of uneaten sushi. While it’s much cheaper to eat here than at a swanky Japanese restaurant, you’re still pay a large sum, so if you’re not capable of downing a serious amount of sushi, Kanda or any all-you-can-eat sushi joint for that matter isn’t worth it.

You can never really predict when the chef will have a good night, but most of my experiences at this particular location have been satisfactory (let’s do this pass/fail). Keep in mind that Kanda is all about quantity rather than quality; so if you’re looking for the latter, look elsewhere.
